For a major in the School of Natural Sciences, continuing students must have a 2.0 science GPA in courses taken towards the intended major or minor and emphasis requirements (including MATH 005 and CHEM 001). Additionally, in accordance with the Early Progress Policy, students must complete their first-level math and chemistry courses prior to being admitted to the major.

First-year students will not be allowed to change their major until the Early Progress Policy has been satisfied

Transfer students admitted to another major who do not meet the selection criteria for the intended major in the School of Natural Sciences at the point of admission are unable to declare the major after admission or matriculation.

Lower division transfer student admitted to Undeclared must first meet the eligibility criteria for their intended major.

Students requesting a major change must prepare a graduation plan in MyDegreePath prior to submitting the online form. Advisors will use this plan to ensure all degree requirements can be completed within the allotted 9 terms of enrollment at UC Merced, per the Normal Progress to Degree policy. If the proposed plan does not include all requirements within the number of terms alotted, the major change may be denied or returned to the student for corrections before approved.

Demajored students requesting to change their major must refer to the Demajored Information.
A student’s request for a change of major or minor may be denied if the science GPA is less than a 2.0. In the event of a denial, a student may request another change of major or minor into the School of Natural Sciences after the Early Progress Policy criteria has been satisfied and the science GPA has reached 2.0.
